About the event
About the Event
By mid-September, Minnesota’s oak woods are entering one of the best periods for hen of the woods, also known as maitake. These large, layered mushrooms form at the bases of mature oaks and can return to the same trees year after year. Their size makes them exciting to find, but identifying prime specimens requires more than simply spotting a cluster.
The Hunt for Hens is built around actively searching for maitake, learning to recognize the trees and habitat that produce them, and evaluating clusters before harvesting. Hens are our primary target, but no particular mushroom can be guaranteed. Fruiting depends on rainfall and temperature, so we’ll work with the conditions the woods give us.
We’ll also identify other fall mushrooms we encounter and use the day’s finds to build practical identification skills across groups. No previous mushroom-identification experience is required. Participants keep what they harvest.
