About the event
Early September is one of the most interesting times to be in Minnesota’s woods. Late-summer mushrooms may still be fruiting while cooling nights begin to bring on the first fall species, creating the possibility of finding mushrooms from several different groups in the same morning.
This foray is not built around one target mushroom. We’ll work with whatever is fruiting and use each find to build practical identification skills. Depending on conditions, that may include boletes, chanterelles, Russula and Lactarius species, polypores, puffballs and other early-fall mushrooms.
Mushrooms follow weather rather than a calendar, so the site is chosen close to the event based on current rainfall, temperature patterns and where conditions appear most promising. No previous mushroom-identification experience is required.
What We Focus On
Identifying mushrooms by cap, stem and spore-bearing surface
Recognizing important differences between similar-looking species
